There's something different about a pour over. It isn't just another way to make coffee, it's an art. It slows the morning down just enough to appreciate the quiet before the day begins.
Our Morning Light roast was crafted for moments like these. This light roast highlights the bright, natural character of the coffee with tasting notes of sweet apple, honey, and raisin, making it an excellent choice for pour over brewing.
What You'll Need
- Roast & Recon Morning Light (whole bean)
- Burr grinder
- Pour over dripper (V60, Kalita Wave, or similar)
- Paper filter
- Gooseneck kettle
- Digital scale
- Fresh filtered water
- Coffee mug or server
The Recipe
- Coffee: 22 grams
- Water: 352 grams (about 11 ounces)
- Water temperature: 200°F (93°C)
- Brew time: 3–4 minutes
- Grind size: Medium, similar to sea salt
This recipe creates a balanced cup that lets Morning Light's sweetness and subtle fruit notes shine.
Step 1: Heat Your Water
Bring fresh filtered water to approximately 200°F. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, bring the water to a boil and let it rest for about 30 seconds before brewing.
Step 2: Rinse the Filter
Place your paper filter in the dripper and thoroughly rinse it with hot water. This removes any paper taste while preheating your brewer and mug. Discard the rinse water before adding coffee.
Step 3: Grind Fresh
Measure 22 grams of Morning Light and grind it just before brewing. Fresh grinding preserves the delicate aromas and flavors.
Step 4: Bloom the Coffee
Pour 44 grams of water over the grounds, ensuring they're evenly saturated. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds. During this stage, trapped carbon dioxide escapes, preparing the grounds for an even extraction.
Step 5: Continue Pouring
Slowly pour the remaining water in controlled circles, starting in the center and working outward without pouring directly onto the filter. Keep the water level consistent throughout the brew until you reach 352 grams total.
Aim to finish pouring around the 2½-minute mark, allowing the coffee to drain completely by about 3 to 4 minutes.
What You Should Taste
A properly brewed cup of Morning Light offers:
- Bright, clean acidity
- Notes of crisp sweet apple
- Gentle raisin sweetness
- A smooth honey-like finish
- A light, refreshing body
Every cup should feel balanced and approachable, making it just as enjoyable on a quiet porch as it is around a campfire.
Brewing Tips
- Use freshly roasted coffee whenever possible.
- Grind immediately before brewing.
- Use filtered water for the cleanest flavor.
- Measure your coffee and water with a scale instead of guessing.
- If the coffee tastes sour, grind slightly finer. If it tastes bitter, grind slightly coarser.
Small adjustments make a noticeable difference.
Start Your Day with Purpose
Great coffee isn't about rushing from one task to the next. It's about taking a few intentional minutes before the day begins. A pour over encourages you to slow down, focus on the process, and enjoy the reward waiting in your cup.
Morning Light was created for those early hours when the air is cool, the world is quiet, and the mission is simple: prepare well for whatever comes next.
Mission First. Coffee Always.
